Learning disabilities affect the brain's ability to receive, process, analyze, or store information. Students with learning disabilities have a difficult time learning as quickly as someone who isn't affected by learning disabilities. Most students affected by learning disabilities have more than one type of disability. Some learning disabilities may affect a person's ability to concentrate or focus and may cause someone's mind to go off task. Learning disabilities make it difficult for a student to read, write, spell, or solve math problems. No one's exactly sure what causes learning disabilities.
Some learning disabilities are initially noticed in grade school when a parent or a teacher sees a student struggling to follow directions for a game or do work that should come easily. Some students develop elaborate ways of disguising their learning issues, therefore preventing detection until adolescence or beyond when schoolwork - and life - get more complicated. |
It's never too late to get help. Upon detection, educational therapy may be used to address the disability thus restoring a student's self-esteem and confidence ultimately enabling them to accomplish their goals and dreams.
